DALLAS (SMU) - Rowing junior captain Emily Fogg was recently honored for her exemplary academic achievement at SMU, being named a recipient of the Robert Stewart Hyer Society's 2018 University Achievement Award.

The Hyer Society is SMU's most prestigious undergraduate honor society. Named for the founding President of SMU, the Hyer Society was established in 1983 to recognize SMU's most intellectually gifted undergraduates who have distinguished themselves through high academic achievement.

"Fogg has been a leader on our team since day one," head coach Kim Cupini said. "She is constantly rising to meet the challenge of being a Division 1 varsity coxswain. She takes initiative on so many fronts, and her impact is felt throughout our team. I'm looking forward to her leading our varsity crew into our first racing season together."

Only a small fraction of SMU students are nominated each year for membership, roughly the top four percent of the student body. To be nominated, a student must have a minimum of 60 hours with 45 SMU graded hours and a cumulative GPA of 3.85 at the time of nomination.

Another requirement was to write a 750-word essay discussing the future of artificial intelligence. Fogg's essay detailed how artificial intelligence will impact the practice of law.

Fogg is pursuing a degree in both Markets and Culture as well as French while minoring in Law and Legal Reasoning.

The University will host a dinner to honor new and returning Scholars on Sunday, February 25.

Fogg and her rowing teammates return to action on March 3, traveling to Alabama.
